Q: What inspired you to develop your patent-pending formula?
It’s more of a ‘whom’ than a ‘what’. My very dear, long-time friend, Vergie Hughes, MS, RN, IBCLC, FILCA, who also happens to be a board certified lactation consultant, sent me a study on the use of a peppermint gel and its effectiveness in treating cracked, sore nipples caused by breastfeeding. Since there was no other product like it on the market, Vergie encouraged me to develop one, and that was all the inspiration I needed.
Q: How long did it take you to perfect your unique, dual-relief formula?
A good 10 years, with the help of several close friends and fellow pharmacists.
Q: Why did you choose to specialize in lactation and breastfeeding pharmacology?
When our first child was born, my wife had a major issue with a lack of let down reflex to start her breast milk flowing. I contacted a La Leche League Leader who gave me great advice. A few months later, the La Leche League Leader contacted me with a question related to medication and breastfeeding. I then realized, as a pharmacist, I needed to learn more about medication use during breastfeeding.
Q: Why did you help start a non-profit organization in Haiti?
The first time I went to Haiti on a medical mission, I found a run-down clinic building with a pharmacy that looked like Old Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. There was no running water or functioning toilet, very little light was able to enter the dark interior of the building, the roof leaked, and it was cold and damp inside…despite being in sunny Haiti!
I vowed at that moment I had to do something to help. So I started the Haiti Medical Mission and co-founded Health and Education for Haiti.
There can be no greater return on any investment in my life than investing in Haiti and its people…I have been blessed hundreds of times over!
